Here are some common sense safety tips for use with the harness and leash:

(1) Be sure the harness and leash are
securely in place and properly applied and
(2) When you sense any danger
or your bird does, hold the bird close to your body with one hand on the
harness holding it as well as the leash to provide the bird with more
safety and to prevent the bird from bolting.
(3) Never leave the bird unattended with the harness and leash on. (It is
not safe to tie the leash
to something and walk off 10 feet away.)
(4) Never carry your bird on your shoulder outside, you could get a face
bite if the bird is startled
(5) Carry the bird securely under the crook of your arm like a purse or
bag or hold it on your hand with your thumbs over the toes. Prevent bolting.
(6) Never jerk the leash. You can injure the bird. If the bird bolts it
will go to the end of its leash and then it will settle to the ground
naturally. Don't jerk it unless you see the bird would land in danger
like a dog's jaws, then you would probably risk the chance of injury with the
leash.
(7) If you set the bird down to take a picture or other things, make it
fast and hold the leash at all times. I double leash my birds if I need more
distance for a picture when I can.
(8) Inspect the leash frequently. Check to see the snaps are working
correctly and no chewing through of the leash has occurred to weaken it.
(9) Buy a contrasting color. It is easier to see a red leash on a white
bird to immediately know visually if a snap has come loose.
(10) Use a cat collar strapped to your wrist with the handle of the leash
attached inside it to prevent it from slipping off your wrist and over
your hand.
(11) Holding a bird's toes, your thumb over the toes, gives you greater
control of a bird when you carry it and seems to prevent them from bolting
from your hands.
(12) Watch that you don't catch the leash on a door handle or anything
sticking out. It is so easy for the leash to wrap around something and
then as you walk away the bird is jerked off your arm or hand.
(13) If you feed the bird while wearing the leash, make sure there is room for the crop to expand.
