Goffin's Cockatoo
(Cacatua goffini)
DISCLAIMER: EACH BIRD IS UNIQUE AND THE FOLLOWING SUMMARY IS ONLY A
GENERALIZATION
Length 12 inches average
Weight 350 grams average
Known as the escape artist among the cockatoos, although all can
potentially escape from their cage or enclosure. They are delightful in
their ability to entertain their loved ones. A high energy, agile, and
charming companion cockatoo. Although smaller in size than many of the cockatoos, a very
large cage for toys and play must be provided. Out of cage time each day is mandatory for
all cockatoos and especially indicated for this very athletic and playful pet bird. Their
play style is described as rough and tumble.
Tends to be loving, but somewhat independent, and usually plays well
on their playstand. Most can occupy themselves in their cages for quite awhile. But they
love to come out and play with their human and be cuddled for extended periods of time.
Voracious eating is reported by many owners who claim their Goffin's eat many varieties of
foods and is not a picky eater. Some meat and chicken is apparently needed in their diet
as they relish a steak or chicken wing.
Males tend to be slightly pinker of cast at maturity although both
sexes are whitish more than pinkish. Visually, there is no appearance
difference between the male and female. Chicks are reported to be of
equal size.
The Gofffin's scream can be annoying and persistent so be sure you and all the members of
your family can tolerate this before you adopt one. It is said that both males and females
love music and love to dance, preferring upbeat music with a good rhythm. Normally,
Goffin's have a short attention span. This is a cockatoo that keeps their owners at their
most attentive level.
Owners describe male Goffin's as being the "Class Clown" who plays non-stop.
Chasing and running games are very favored by the males, owners report. Very sensitive to
the moods of their owners. These cockatoos are described as "super sensitive."
One owner said the male Goffin's "is the little brat" around here. Males like to
pull the tails of other birds in your home and are said more often by owners to be very
mechanical. Males are not said to love the other birds in the home as much as female
owners report this behavior. Note that the Goffin's not only lets himself out of his cage
after he picks a lock, he lets all the other birds out of their cages too.
Owners describe female Goffin's as being happy cockatoos that are always busy, always
moving in their cage from toy to toy. It is said they like small toys. Females are said to
be very determined and a little bull-headed about getting their way. They play with toys
all day long. Females seem to be more loving of the other birds in the home than males,
their owner's report. They are described as hopping like a little bunny and they talk
really cute. Goffin's explore anything you give them. Not all of them do talk. These
darling creatures are active, inquisitive and bright.
